January Avenue

“To exist is to change, to change is to mature,
To mature is to go on, Creating oneself endlessly”

(Henri Bergson)

What’s in a name? Why January Avenue?
The month of January is named after the Roman God Janus who is the god of new beginnings/transitions. The path for change is symbolised by Avenue because we love those long & wide tree-lined avenues in some of our favourite cities and towns.
Context for our work
“In the past, jobs were about muscles, now they’re about brains, but in the future, they’ll be about the heart.” Minouche Shafik, former Director of the London School of Economics
January Avenue’s purpose is to develop leadership the world of tomorrow needs, delivering value beyond the individual. We apply a systemic approach to all our client engagements as leadership is a collective undertaking, including but not limited to;
•    managing expectations of multiple stakeholders
•    operating efficiently whilst at the same time transforming the organisation to meet future opportunities and challenges
•    being a member of numerous different teams
•    working with systemic conflict
•    the world is becoming increasingly unpredictable and interdependent (an increasingly VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex & ambiguous) environment)
•    virtual/remote working
•    the major challenges lie not in the parts but in the connections

We also provide career management coaching in partnership with Dobson Lyle.

My Story

My first significant career transition took place when I was invited by my employer, at the age of twenty-five, to relocate to French-speaking West Africa (Côte d’Ivoire) and become general manager of a $100m+ turnover cocoa processing business employing 200 staff. It was there that I learnt I had the capability to assume significant levels of responsibility. Since then I have made a number of other significant transitions during a varied commercial and industrial career that included leading businesses in the USA and a handful of European countries. I came across coaching mid-way during my career and learnt how impactful coaching interventions can be in periods of significant change, My reflections on these transitions stimulated me to want to help others with their own transitions, using best practice coaching techniques.

Developing More Sophisticated Ways of Thinking

Feeling overwhelmed? There’s a label for this; it’s called VUCA which stands for Volatile, Uncertain, Complex & Ambiguous. The Information Age has contributed hugely to this phenomenon. The feeling of being overwhelmed comes from having to deal with the explosion of inputs (information) we have to process at any one point in time.

In short, there is a need to generate more meaning-making capacity to cope with this phenomenon. There has never been a greater need to find and develop leaders who can cope with the enormous calls on their attention and thrive in this environment. The qualities that define these leaders are not “What they Do” but “How they Think”; having the capacity to hold lots of variables and make sense of these i.e. making informed choices having considered multiple perspectives.

“Leading in Flow” develops leaders’ thinking capacity to take on and operate more effectively in the face of the VUCA environment. The framework underpinning “Leading in Flow” is known as Vertical Development.

Vertical Development refers to advancement in a person’s thinking capability. The outcome of vertical stage development is the ability to think in more complex, systemic, strategic, and interdependent ways. It is about how you think, which can measured through stage development interviews and surveys.

Our service;

  1. Profiles the leader’s Vertical Development stage and helps them make sense of what that means to them and their leadership
  2. Coaches the leader to “grow-up” and expand their worldview/mindset
